Cancer pain management continues to be inadequately treated despite more than three decades of educational seminars, national guidelines, and patient awareness. All of these efforts have failed to overcome recognized barriers to adequate pain management during the treatment of cancer even at tertiary care academic medical centers. While complex oncologic therapeutics have been incorporated into routine practice, the principles of cancer pain management continue to be ignored even though they are straight-forward and can be applied in every practice.

Speaker:

Nora Janjan, MD, MPSA, MBA – a retired radiation oncologist and palliative care specialist – currently performs consulting work in comparative effectiveness research and health policy and is a senior fellow in healthcare at the National Center for Policy Analysis. Formerly, Dr. Janjan was a tenured professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Symptom Research at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Past-President of the American Society for Radiation Oncology, she has also served on numerous committees, panels and advisory boards, and has written more than 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 60 book chapters.
